all the books

Last school year, I had this great little part-time job during the week...2 hours each day after school got out.  It was a receptionist type of position with very little hands on work to be done.  I mostly sat at a desk, answered the phone if it rang and dismissed students from their after school program when their parents arrived to pick them up.  Simple.  And something that could have become quite monotonous (and did at times) except that because of the simplicity of the job, I was allowed to bring a book to read each day.  When I first started working, I often felt guilty spending the downtime with my nose in a book but after a couple months of trying to come up with other things to fill my time (meal planning and list making can only go so far), I decided to give in and start reading.

I have to admit that reading was put on the way, way back burner for me over the last 6 years or so.  With two littles running around, finding the time to read just wasn't happening for me.  Today, I am incredibly grateful for last year and for that little job that gave me the opportunity to get back to books.  In case you have gotten away from reading and need a reminder -- there is just something so wonderful about holding a book in your hands and turning those paper pages.  I know so many of us have gotten into reading on Kindles or our phones or some other device...but, no, it's just not the same.

I honestly don't remember how many books I read last year or what they all were.  I started making a list which I have since lost but I wanted to share with you the ones that really stood out.  And, if you're looking for something good to read, these would be my recommendations.

Wonder by R.J. Palacio - this is a must read not only for adults but students as well.
Notes From a Blue Bike by Tsh Oxenreider
Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne - my favorite parenting book!  I am about to start it again.
A Long Way From Chicago by Richard Peck
A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck
A Season of Gifts by Richard Peck
All 3 of the Richard Peck books were recommendations from my mom.  I loved them all.  They were quick but incredibly heart-warming reads.
Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin - all of her books are so good!

When school started back up last January I dove into -- The Harry Potter Series.
I had never read them previously and all I can say is I am just so glad that I finally read them.  Honestly, I was just in awe of how J.K. Rowling had to have seen the future of the books as she was writing even in the beginning.  It took me pretty much the remainder of the school year to read all 7 of these books.  I was so excited to finish them because I really wanted to watch the movies but sadly I haven't been able to bring myself to watch them!  I tried starting a few of the movies but have not found them nearly as enchanting as the books.  Now, I'm just looking forward to that sister weekend to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. ;)

So those were my faves.  The ones that I would definitely go back and read again.  I'm always looking for another great book to read before bed or while I'm waiting in the elementary school pick up line.  What would you recommend?
